Have you ever wondered how some of your favorite artist's music careers began?
You're in luck, because today I'm bringing you Cozizwa's story and how his journey in music began.
Cozizwa is no stranger to the Malawian Gospel community and when he's not making his own music, he's producing other people's music at his 'Zozizwa' Studio.
Cozizwa's music career did not happen overnight and it certainly wasn't random; his father a guitarist and his mother a singer, he was exposed to music from a very young age.
When he was about 5 years old, he and his friends created a band in which he was a drummer (of tin cans), and they composed their own music.
Although he did not record his music until much later, Cozizwa began writing music around the age of 12. It wasn't until 4 years later, at 16 years old, when he finally got a taste of recording his own music. Even then, it wasn't an official studio experience. He and his friend took a laptop, headsets, and a microphone and got to it. They were, in his words, "trying things out"
At this point, he became interested in music production but couldn't yet do it for himself, and so continued to go to other people's studios.
Eventually, he and three other friends - Saxess, Chisomo, and Timothy - formed a group called New Generational Worshippers. They began recording on a more professional level, including an album in 2011. This got them some airplay and several events.
A few years later, he moved to Lilongwe and joined a church where he met 2Kay. They eventually became friends and started talking about a joint project which proved to be the genesis of Zozizwa Tape which was later released in June 2018.
They are yet to release music together again and are currently focusing on their solo careers but there are plans for a new joint single soon and they remain co-owners of 'Zozizwa' the label.
As much as his music career began a while ago, he says it has been slow coming due to the fact that while he was making music, school was his primary focus. It wasn't always easy to balance school and music, but as he grew older, he began learning how to juggle the two better.
Since the release of his mixtape with 2Kay in 2018, he has since released 4 singles, but he promises to release even more music in the future.
He is currently working on a music video for his latest song 'Ngiyabonga' which he features Kelvin Sings and has said that the music video will be released later this year.
